I created this simple scene some time ago to test Maxwells depth of field. At the current resolution (1080-fullHD), it took almost four days to finish (means to reach a smoothe sample level). Yesterday, I exported the scene to Keyshot. It looks ABSOLUTELY the same at a rendertime of about 90 minutes. Thatīs asolutely awesome! Keyshot is not really a competition for Maxwell. Keyshot doesnīt even support subsurfacescattering, animation, motion blur or even light layer mixing. But for certain scenes itīs a real fast option. It impresses me everyday again.
What I've managed to glean, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that Pixar uses a secret in-house renderer. And that they use... biased rendering? Image tricks?
Thatīs basicly, what I said. This "secret" inhouse renderer goes by the name Pixar renderman and can be purchased legally. There is nothing secret about it. And yes itīs not unbiased. So itīs biased. Using tricks is quite normal for movie productions. Those tricks are for example texture and animation baking, matte painting, HDR mapping and billboard rendering.
Excellent work
I donīt think any animation studio uses unbiased rendering. Iīs way too slow.

Wikipedia time.
